Separation Anxiety In Dogs

Click here to see how I solved my dogs separation anxiety problems! Contrary to popular belief, our family pets can suffer from dog separation anxiety just as much as their human counterparts. Dog separation anxiety is a response to stress and nothing can bring out anxiety in a dog as much as separation from an owner. Needless to say, a great deal of panic can set in with a family dog that seriously misses it owner.
A dog with separation anxiety becomes abnormally anxious when separated from his owner. Some dogs become anxious as soon as the owner leaves, and other dogs have a period of time during which they are comfortable alone, but than they become anxious if the owner is gone for an extended period. This is typical for people that live in apartments and leave dogs alone during working hours.
The best way to deal with severe separation anxiety in dogs is to get your dog used to your coming and going. Teach your dog to remain calm every time you step out of the door. Keep a boring, low-key departure. Long-dramatic farewell will create more separation anxiety in him. A casual “Goodbye” or “See you later” will do. When you first arrive home, ignore him for a couple of minutes, and then calmly pet him.
Always provide him with lots of exercise and playtime. Remember when dealing with dog separation anxiety problems that a tired, well-exercised dog is a happy dog. He will be much more contented to sleep during the day while you’re away. Mental exercises such as training and socializing with other dogs are all great activities for your dog.
Provide your dog with some of his favorite toys and treats so that he will have something to do while you’re gone. Stuff some treats into his toys to keep his mind occupied rather than having him waiting anxiously for you to come back.
These are just a few ways you can correct your dog's separation anxiety. Your dogs, believe it or not, thrive on your approval and love, and when a young or newly purchased dog is distant from his new owner, he goes a little stir crazy. It's the same for just about any dog of any breed, so you'll need to be there for it and use the methods we have covered in this article to cure the separation anxiety in your dog.
